The audition for the BA Contemporary Dance consists of two rounds. For the first round there are three possibilities: an online audition or one of the two live auditions in Berlin or Linz. The successful applicants of the first rounds are being invited to join the second round in Linz.

Admission Requirements

Requirements for this degree program are a significant talent for movement, very good previous knowledge and a high aptitude for contemporary dance as well as a solid knowledge of ballet. An openness to diverse artistic approaches is expected.

Applicants are being selected for the beginning of the BA studies and enrolled into the first semester. Entering into a higher semester, due to previous studies is only possible in exceptional cases. 

Please do understand that due to the high number of applicants we are not able to give feedback during the process.

The commission reserves the right to make decisions regarding the allocation of study places based on the video application already.

Important Information and Tasks for the First Round

You have the possibility to either directly upload your videos or to upload a PDF with the links to your videos. Videos that are being uploaded must meet the following criteria:

  • Allowed file formats: MP4 or MOV
  • Duration per video: maximum 5 min
  • Size of video files: maximum 500 MB each
  • Number of uploaded videos: maximum 2

Tasks and demonstration videos

For your video application please follow the tasks and demonstration videos below. Please stick to the given time and make sure that your videos are labelled clearly.

1. Please introduce yourself shortly in German or English (1 minute)

  • What’s your name, how old are you, where are you from, what have you done so far?
  • Why would you like to study contemporary dance?

2. Contemporary Dance (1.5 minutes)

3. Ballet-technique (3 Minutes)

4. Improvisation task (2 minutes)

Please film yourself dancing the following improvisation tasks:

  • Using the articulation of all your joints, play with the idea of folding and unfolding - from outside to inside / from inside to outside.
  • Use this idea to work with level changes. How does this take you down into the floor and up again? How many different levels can you explore?
  • Add changes of dynamic to your exploration. Work with relaxation as well as strength/tension. How can both inhabit the body at the same time?
  • Finally, play with different tempos. Can you play with different speeds, from very slow to very fast?

Admission Requirements

Requirements for the degree programme: The prerequisite for admission to the Master's programme is a positively completed Bachelor's degree in the field of dance or at least an equivalent university degree or proven professional work experience of several years in the field of dance.

Admission Procedure

Please use the online registration and send the following application documents to Maria Weinert (maria.weinerttyrbrucknerunirat): 

  • Up to 3 different video links (YouTube links) to own artistic and pedagogical works. The body and dance practice of the applicant must be visible in the video links: either in the form of a dance solo, an excerpt from a piece, a training session carried out by the applicant or a dance class. The applicant should be clearly identifiable. 
  • A written answer to the following questions:
    • Which artistic work and which reading has particularly impressed you in recent months
    • What would you like us to know?
    • What expectations do you associate with the specific orientation of this degree programme - Movement Research or Dance Education?
  • motivation letter and detailed curriculum vitae

Pre-selection
The jury reviews the submitted documents and invites selected candidates to the online audition at the ABPU. Applicants will be informed in good time before the online audition whether they are invited.
