Information for students

With the 2018 Data Protection Amendment Act, private universities are connected to the “data network of universities and colleges” (Section 7a of the Education Documentation Act). This means that the state matriculation number system, which was previously only used by universities and teacher training colleges, has been extended to include universities of applied sciences and private universities. This makes it necessary to exchange the matriculation numbers previously issued by the ABPU for a new state matriculation number.

A matriculation number is used to identify a person within a directory of persons. At universities and universities of applied sciences, each student is assigned a matriculation number upon enrollment. Each number is only issued once to ensure unique identification.

The matriculation number now has eight digits and is composed as follows:
Digit 1 describes the institution at which the initial admission was carried out.
1, 2 or 3 universities
4 university colleges of teacher education
5 universities of applied sciences
6 private universities
Digits 2 and 3 indicate the year of admission
Digits 4 to 8 indicate a consecutive number
