Brass Instruments and Percussion
The Institute for Brass and Percussion (BBS) promotes highly talented young musicians with its qualified faculty and provides future artists with comprehensive professional training in the creative, interpretive, pedagogical, and theoretical areas of instrumental training.
The institute sees a further mission in the cultivation of the entire heritage of musical culture and in the research, preservation and transmission of the musical heritage from past eras, but also in helping to shape current and future musical development.
What distinguishes the training in Linz is its sheer flexibility. There is an Open-Studio approach to instruction that affords students the exposure to a rich variety of artistic and conceptual methods; in addition, there is an unusually wide range of minors on offer, to pursue whatever your interests or career aspirations may be.
The friendly, collegial and open spirit of the Institute does not contradict its ambition for highest quality and pursuit of excellence, though: professors enjoy an enviable, international reputation and our graduates were able to secure positions in some of the most distinguished orchestras and ensembles. For those leaning towards a career as instrumental teachers, our cooperation with the State Music School System (Landesmusikschulwerk of Upper Austria) proves a fantastic ressource, and employment opportunities are excellent.
And there is a good reason for it: many students choose to pursue a BA in Performance and a Bachelor in Music Education side by side; also, your principal study teacher in your major will be the same for either degree – which seems normal to us, even if it is not in the world of universities of music.
Whatever your artistic or teaching aspirations may be, then: BBS is the right home for them.
