Mission Statement
Music – Drama – Dance
The Bruckner University is a university for the fields of music, drama and dance. It sees its mission equally in artistic, artistic-pedagogical and artistic-scholarly education as well as in the development, exploration and communication of the arts.
Innovation and tradition
The ABPU is committed to promoting innovation as well as maintaining tradition. This means that the university sees itself both as a flexible, future-oriented experimental laboratory of the arts and as a place where cultural heritage is cultivated, reflected upon and conveyed. The interrelations between the historical and the contemporary result in a special artistic, artistic-pedagogical and artistic-scholarly potential.
Disciplinarity and transdisciplinarity
The ABPU cultivates the individual artistic disciplines in their own specific forms. On the basis of this work, it develops cross-disciplinary opportunities for collaboration in teaching, research and transdisciplinary projects, in line with current trends in the arts.
Lifelong learning
As an institution of artistic education, the ABPU is committed to the idea of lifelong learning, which not only focuses on the acquisition of professional qualifications, but also on the development of social skills. In addition to the classical study programmes, the ABPU also offers opportunities for the promotion of young talent (within the framework of the Pre-College) as well as opportunities for further and continuing education (in the form of master classes and part-time certificate programmes).
Educational and Cultural Institution
The ABPU is not only a place of diverse artistic, artistic-pedagogical and artistic-scholarly education, but also sees itself as a cultural institution. Through a wide range of events (in Linz, in Upper Austria and beyond), the ABPU contributes significantly to cultural life.
Reflection and research
The idea of continuous development and exploration of the arts plays an important role in teaching, research and artistic projects at the ABPU. Artistic creation, performances and productions and their documentation not only manifest an artistic-practical self-image, but also a reflective attitude on the part of students and faculty. In addition, the ABPU places a strong emphasis on scholarly (historical and systematic) research into art-related topics, as well as on artistic-scholarly research at the intersection of artistic and scholarly methods.
Regional roots
On the basis of its regional and supra-regional roots in the cultural life of Upper Austria, the ABPU provides significant impetus for the production, interpretation, reflection and communication of the arts. There are collaborations with cultural institutions such as the Landestheater Linz, the Bruckner Orchestra, the Brucknerhaus and the Ars Electronica Center, as well as with music, theater and dance educational institutions, in particular with the OÖ Landesmusikschulwerk, as well as with universities and colleges. The collaboration with various educational institutions offers the opportunity to understand and shape developments in the educational and cultural landscape as a common concern.
International Networking
In view of the internationality of art, international exchange is one of the Bruckner University's guiding principles. Both the student body and the faculty are international. The university maintains a network of international partnerships with universities and colleges in order to create exchange opportunities for students, faculty and administrative employees. International cooperation in teaching and research, as well as transnational artistic projects, enable transcultural experiences for all participants. They stand for the idea of an open society in which people from different backgrounds work together to realize artistic ideas.
Quality Assurance
To ensure high quality in studies, teaching, artistic practice and research, the Bruckner University maintains its own quality management system. This serves to continuously monitor the efficient use of resources, to analyze strengths and deficits, and to explore development opportunities. At the center of this is the continuous examination of the idea of quality: artistic as well as artistic-pedagogical and artistic-scholarly quality. The guiding principle is the maintenance and further development of excellence in all areas.
Diversity and equality
The ABPU sees great potential for the further development of both the arts and society in diversity – in terms of gender, religion/belief, ethnicity, for example. While respecting differences, it also ensures equality, especially between men and women. We are committed to considering the needs of people with disabilities.
Learning organization
The Anton Bruckner University sees itself as a learning organization that deals with questions of further development in a continuous process of self-reflection. As an artistic university, it is guided by the principle of a “work in progress”.
Culture of appreciation
The working atmosphere at the Bruckner University is characterized by a culture of mutual appreciation. Open and friendly communication characterizes not only the interaction between students and faculty, but also the collegial interaction and the relationship between our administration and faculty.
