Robert Hewitt was born in 1975 in Northampton, England and studied at the Royal Ballet School in London, graduating in 1993.

Between 1993 and 2001 he worked as a professional ballet dancer and performed in all of the major classical repertoire with the Ballett der Vereinigte Bühnen Graz, the Norwegian National Ballet and the Ballet of the Vienna State Opera. As well as performing in works by Ashton, Macmillan, and Balanchine, he also danced in several new creations by contemporary choreographers.

Since 2004 he has been working as a freelance teacher in classical ballet. His guest teaching has taken him all over Europe, and he is regularly invited to teach at some of the leading contemporary dance companies and institutions throughout the continent, including Göteborg Danskompani, Cullberg Ballet, Skånes Dansteater, Norrdans, Carte Blanche Norway, Gärtnerplatz Theater München, Tanz Mainz, and Scottish Dance Theatre. 

He has also taught the professional daily training classes at renowned institutions such as Henny Jurriens Foundation Amsterdam, Proda Oslo, Dansenshus Copenhagen and Balettakademien Stockholm.

At home in Austria he is a regular guest teacher for Oper Graz and Landestheater Linz as well as giving yearly workshops for the students at Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Wien.

He is in demand at Summer Festivals, including Bolzano Danza, Stockholm International Summer Festival, Bühnenwerkstatt Graz and Polardans Norway.

Aside from his career teaching dancers, between 2001-2021 Robert Hewitt was Ballet Master for the Austrian Rhythmic Gymnastic Team, where he accompanied his students to multiple successful World and European Championships and his gymnasts participated in three Olympic Games.

Since 2009 Robert Hewitt is a member of the dance faculty of the Anton Bruckner Private University, where his former students have gone on to perform with companies such as Hofesh Schechter Company, Norrdans and Skånes Dansteater, as well as successful freelance careers.
