Funded traineeships abroad for undergraduates and graduates

A traineeship abroad in the course of the EU programme Erasmus+ facilitates international and intercultural work experience as well as the acquisition of foreign language skills and additional qualifications.

Students of ABPU can apply for support from the Erasmus+ programme for planned internship stays in EU member states (except Austria as sending country), as well as Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Northern Macedonia, Turkey and Serbia. An internship abroad can be completed at universities, educational or research institutions relevant to studies, cultural institutions or companies (theatre, opera, dance company, television and radio stations, etc.). However, institutions, bodies and agencies of the European Union, as well as diplomatic representations are excluded in order to avoid conflicts of interest and double funding.

At our institution, we promote two different types of traineeships: Voluntary and Graduate. A traineeship can be applied for from the first year of study for a duration of two to twelve months. Students can do both Erasmus Study Mobilities (SMS) and Erasmus Traineeship Mobilities (SMT) within one study cycle, provided that the total duration does not exceed 12 months.

  • The internship placement must be independently sought and must be related to the content of the student’s study programme
  • The duration of the internship must be at least 2 months (60 days). The maximum mobility period is 12 months per study cycle (BA or MA), including any previously completed/funded Erasmus+ mobility periods (study or traineeship mobilities) in that study cycle (even if completed during a different study programme or in another country)
  • The internship must correspond to full-time employment: min. 30h/week and max. 40h/week
  • If not covered by the internship institution, the applicant is responsible for ensuring sufficient insurance coverage (health, accident, liability insurance) abroad. Proof of sufficient health, accident and liability insurance valid for the entire period of the internship must be submitted before the start of the internship
  • Voluntary Internships
    • Applications are possible from the first semester of the relevant degree programme. However, it is recommended that a student internship in the Bachelor's degree programme is not carried out before the third semester
    • The voluntary internship can also be directly combined with an Erasmus study mobility
    • Students must be enrolled at the ABPU for the entire duration of the mobility and, even in the case of an exemption from the regular tuition fees, pay the ÖH-fee on time
    • The regular tuition fee can only be waived if the internship lasts at least two months within the semester’s teaching period (winter semester: from October to January or summer semester: from March to June) AND neither courses are attended at the ABPU nor exams are taken during that time. The ÖH fee must be paid on time even in the case of an exemption from the regular tuition fees. Regular enrolment is a prerequisite for funding eligibility
    • No individual artistic lessons are permitted during the period of the internship.
    • Voluntary internships must be listed in the Diploma Supplement: The Diploma Supplement is a document issued as an addition to the degree certificate. The entry is made automatically, but must be checked by the student
  • Graduate Internships
    • Students must be regularly enrolled at the ABPU at the time of application and complete all formalities in connection with the grant before the last examination. Graduates may not be enrolled in any active studies during the internship
    • At the start of the internship, the applicant must have successfully completed his/her studies and must have been exmatriculated from ABPU
    • The entire eligible period must occur within the first year (365 days) of graduation
  • Applications are possible at any time, but the Erasmus grant, which depends on the destination country, can only be paid according to the availability of funds. There is no guarantee and no legal claim to funding
  • Funding period for traineeships: Erasmus+ grant for up to 6 months (extension on request, depending on budgetary feasibility from EU funds, otherwise "zero grant", i.e. Erasmus+ status without grant).

The traineeship place must be sought on the student's own responsibility.

In some cases, suitable advertisements are posted on internship databases:

Recommended documents for an application (in the national language or in English):

  • CV (tabular curriculum vitae, e.g.: https://europa.eu/europass/en/create-europass-cv
  • Letter of motivation describing the desired acquisition of competencies (max. 1 A4 page)
  • Ask a teacher for a letter of recommendation (either in the national language of the organisation or in English)
  • Transcript of Records (available upon request in the faculty office; indicate the language of issue (DE or EN) and consider the processing time!)

As soon as the internship place is confirmed, contact the ABPU Erasmus Office, request a checklist and start with the necessary formalities:

  • Traineeship Agreement is drawn up with the internship provider and, if necessary, coordinated with the responsible main subject teacher or head of institute
  • Data Sheet must be signed by the head of the responsible ABPU institute
  • Ensure comprehensive insurance cover abroad (clarify possible co-insurance with parents/relatives) or organise it in good time.

  • at the host institution: Apply at the host institution from approximately a year to at least 6 months before the desired starting date.
  • at the Erasmus Office as soon as a traineeship place is confirmed: Applications are possible at any time, but the Erasmus grant, which depends on the destination country, can only be paid according to the availability of funds. There is no guarantee and no legal claim to funding. Submission of Traineeship Agreement and Data Sheet at the latest 8 weeks before the start of the traineeship.

  • Funding period for traineeships: Erasmus+ grant for up to 6 months (extension on request, depending on budgetary feasibility from EU funds, otherwise "zero grant", i.e. Erasmus+ status without grant)
  • Financial support: in the cultural sphere, traineeships are often unpaid, but if they are paid, the salary does not affect the eligibility or the amount of the Erasmus+ grant
  • Opportunity to take an online placement test or an online language course, e.g. in the national or working language
  • Erasmus+ Traineeship Agreement: traineeship agreement between ABPU, receiving organisation and student
  • Diploma Supplement: voluntary internships relevant to studies are listed in a supplement to the degree certificate.
